John Kayser

Representing the estate of: John Kayser (1922-2007) lived and worked in Los Angeles, California.

Kayser created the majority of his work in the 60’s and 70’s in California and his work consists of a wide range of photographs and 8mm films in which the female body is the subject. Over the course of 30 years his unique and secretive oeuvre has evolved in the streets of Los Angeles and in the comfort of his own home, but was only discovered after his death in 2007. The collection of his work that was brought to light following his death contained vintage photographs, polaroids, slides and hours of 8mm film.

Due to this incidental find, one could argue Kayser made his work without any intention of ever exhibiting or selling them. The reason why he took the photos and why he made no effort in sharing them with the outside world, is still up for speculation. These unknown factors behind his work contribute to the secretive aspect of his body of work. They also raise the question if Kayser would have even liked to have his work in the public eye. In this sense, he is more akin to an outsider than someone who deliberately engaged with the art world in the traditional sense.
