On Daniel Schubert

Observation is always at the base of Schubert’s paintings, for example of nature or of urban elements from his his immediate surroundings. Schubert restructures these close observations into abstract well-balanced compositions. Simultaneously Schubert seems to play with the perception of the beholder. His paintings are almost meditative in nature, due to the concentrated serenity in shape and color that they express. Often a subtle form of optical illusion plays an important part in his paintings, making them extra intriguing and causing the need for an up-close inspection.

Schubert’s work method is also one of peace and tranquillity. With old, traditional painting techniques including the use of rabbit glue and homemade egg tempera he works for months sometimes years on a painting before it reaches completion. It is a slow process in which he searches for new forms of expression in painting, and in which he seems to give fleeting impressions from everyday life a deeper and lasting meaning.

Daniel Schubert (1984, D) lives and works in Düsseldorf, Germany. After graduating in Painting from Kunstakademie Düsseldorf he exhibited his work among others at Galerie Gebr. Lehmann, Berlin, Städtische Galerie, Iserlohn, Germany museum k20, Düsseldorf and Supramental Artspace, Berlin. Recently he had a solo show at Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art, Peekskill, NY.
