CURATED by LAW

For the very first time Galerie Gerhard Hofland presents a solo show of the young German painter Daniel Schubert. Before he exhibited at the gallery together with another abstract painter Koen Delaere. The paintings by Schubert are very divers, however always abstract. They vary from ephemeral and poetic works in which transparency of the canvas plays an important role, to more graphical with subtle patterns and forms.

Observation is always at the base of Schubert’s paintings, for example of nature or of urban elements from his immediate surroundings, next to visual material from the media. Schubert restructures these close observations into abstract well-balanced compositions. An important aspect in this process is the appropriation of existing motives. Simultaneously Schubert seems to play with the perception of the beholder. His paintings are almost meditative in nature, due to the concentrated serenity in shape and color that they express. Often a subtle form of optical illusion plays an important part in his paintings, making them extra intriguing and causing the need for an up-close inspection.

Schubert’s work method is also one of peace and tranquillity. With old, traditional painting techniques including the use of rabbit glue and homemade egg tempera he works for months sometimes years on a painting before it reaches completion. It is a slow process in which he searches for new forms of expression in painting, and in which he seems to give fleeting impressions from everyday life a deeper and lasting meaning.

Daniel Schubert (1984, D) lives and works in Düsseldorf, Germany. Schubert is an upcoming talent and is seen by ART Das Kunstmagazin as one of the best newcomers in the field of contemporary painting.
After graduating in Painting from Kunstakademie Düsseldorf he exhibited his work among others at Galerie Gebr. Lehmann, Berlin, Städtische Galerie, Iserlohn, Germany museum k20, Düsseldorf and Supramental Artspace, Berlin. Recently he had a solo show at Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art, Peekskill, NY.
