Daniel Schubert – A Four Hand Piano Piece

Saturday, April 29 until Saturday, June 3

Opening Reception: Saturday April 29 17:00 – 19:00 hours

Gerhard Hofland is proud to present A Four Hand Piano Piece, the second solo exhibition by Daniel Schubert with the gallery. This exhibition follows his Dutch solo debut Curated by LAW from 2014.

The paintings of Daniel Schubert are atmospheric, poetic, and explore diverse painterly aspects such as the transparency and skin of the canvas and subtle forms of optical illusion.
Observation is always at the base of Schubert’s work. This goes as much for the artist as for the way his paintings challenge the spectator’s sensory perception. Schubert restructures his close observations into well-balanced, abstract compositions that seem almost meditative by nature. Their concentrated serenity, expressed through shape, colour, and innovative use of technique make Schubert’s paintings intriguing and cause the need for an up-close encounter with the canvas.
While Schubert’s working method is one of peace and tranquility, using classic materials such as rabbit glue and homemade egg tempera, the reception of his works also depends on concentration and gains power through duration. The duet between artist and spectator can therefore be a slow and intensive process, but allows both parties to find new forms of expression in painting and gives fleeting impressions from everyday life a deeper and lasting meaning.

In A Four Hand Piano Piece Schubert shows paintings from a new series called Pieces / Aggregat & Kompositum, in which the artist continues his ongoing exploration of the framework of contemporary painting while keeping in touch with purity and a natural material palette.
The title of the exhibition is a reference to the intricate relationship between the work of the artist and its audience. The paintings dictate the setting, and can be considered as a gesture of the artist handing the spectator an instrument to consider things from a different point of view. Both this gesture and the reception of the works by the audience provide the possibility of empathy for contrary positions in which the artist and the spectator play contradictory, but equally important roles.
