Wouter van Riessen (1967, the Netherlands) works with many media: drawing, painting, photography, graphics and music. In his visual art, he plays with the tension between the living and the lifeless, and between human and doll. His boisterous color schemes and simplified subjects grant Van Riessen’s work a playful, almost childlike appearance. But the play of children often belies its purpose. There’s an unconscious process at work, as is also the case with Van Riessen, which in his hands becomes pleasingly treacherous, and equally familiar.
