During Art Island 2024 we will present work by Arjan van Helmond and Jochen Mühlenbrink. While Van Helmond is interested in painting as a medium that helps us reflect on the role of objects and spaces in our daily lives: a bed where someone has slept, an empty garden chair, the edge of a swimming pool; spaces are like opportunities where we, as viewers, can project our storyline. Van Helmond enjoys exploring the possibilities of his typical figuration in new materials. Mühlenbrink’s works are more like depictions of physical reality, fictitious images and physical objects at the same time. His new mirror series, for example, is in reality nothing but vernis on mirror and exist both through the illusion they produce and the material of which they consist.
