Gerhard Hofland is proud to present an exhibition with all new works by Dutch artist Joost Krijnen (1983, NL).

Joost Krijnen works in repetitive sequences of drawing and sketching in which he depicts thoughts and situations from his personal life in an associative manner. Single drawings are often complied into larger compositions by connecting them through strong, decisive lines, or by literally piecing them together in collage. This way, Krijnen creates complex images that reveal a multitude of perspectives and narratives.
Both Krijnen’s style and practice are direct by nature and give clear insight into the working method of the artist. Rather than planning his images carefully on forehand, they come into existence through drawing them directly. Once a line is drawn, there is no way back, while an infinity of new possibilities is created. This direct approach and the personal nature of Krijnen’s images make is work both wonderfully disarming and vulnerable, while the depicted scenes are also often considered comical or cheeky because of the loose and recognisable style of the artist.
Through a unique and challenging visual language, which is balanced between drawing, painting, collage and spatial installation, Krijnen has been building continuously on a rich and distinct body of work that keeps on questioning the nature of his practice. For this he was awarded the Dutch Royal Award for Modern Painting and the Scheffer Award of Museum Dordrecht in 2015.

Joost Krijnen (1983, Breda, NL) lives and works in Amsterdam. He graduated from the AKV/St Joost Academy and was a resident at the Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunsten. In 2015 Krijnen won the Dutch Royal Prize for Modern Painting and the Scheffer Award from the Museum Dordrecht. Work by Krijnen is part of public collections such as Museum Dordrecht (NL), SCHUNCK*, Heerlen (NL), and the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam (NL), and was acquired by corporate collections such as the LUMC, Leiden, the VU Medisch Centrum, Amsterdam, and the ING Collection (all NL).
