At NAP+, we are presenting a collection of works by artists who each engage with the act of creation in distinct yet interconnected ways.

Janine van Oene (1988, NL) begins this exploration by navigating the boundary between abstraction and figuration, transforming strange and ambiguous shapes into images that ultimately become recognisable. Her work invites viewers to question their perceptions, as forms that seem familiar gradually reveal themselves to be more fragmented and complex upon closer inspection.

Building on this theme of perception, Koen Delaere (1970, NL) takes the physical act of painting to the forefront. His highly structured and rhythmic works emphasise the materiality of the canvas, blurring the line between painting and sculpture. In Delaere’s work, the process of creation itself becomes a focal point, adding layers of physical presence that resonate with van Oene’s transformation of forms.

Lieven Hendriks (1970, NL) further deepens this dialogue by playing with the viewer’s expectations through trompe l’oeil techniques. His flat canvases deceive the eye, appearing as loosely stretched linens, challenging how we observe and interpret art. Hendriks’ work echoes the perceptual play found in both van Oene’s and Delaere’s approaches, as it questions the nature of reality and the influence of context on our attention.

Complementing these explorations in painting, Johan Tahon (1965, BE) introduces a sculptural dimension with his powerful bronze statues inspired by Vincent van Gogh. Like Delaere, Tahon emphasises the physicality and craftsmanship in his work, where the visible hand of the artist speaks to a deeper existential inquiry.
